Quantum Kinetic Theory: the Disordered Electron Problem
نویسنده
چکیده
These are notes for lectures delivered at the NATO ASI on Dynamics in Leiden, The Netherlands, in July 1998. The quantum kinetic theory for noninteracting electrons in a disordered solid is introduced and discussed. We first use many-body theory to derive the quantum Boltz-mann equation that describes transport and time correlation functions in this system. Particular attention is paid to the calculation of the electrical conductivity σ, and the density response function χ nn. We then consider corrections to the Boltzmann equation due to wave interference effects. The disorder expansion of the conductivity is addressed, and the so-called weak localization or long-time tail contribution to σ is discussed. We conclude with a brief discussion of the influence of electron-electron interactions on the properties of disordered electronic systems.

In recent years, semiconductor nanostructures have become the model systems of choice for investigation of electrical conduction on short length scales. Quantum transport is studied in a two dimensional electron gas because of the combination of a large Fermi wavelength and large mean free path. In the present work, a numerical method is implemented in order to contribute to the understanding ...
متن کاملEnergy relaxation in the spin-polarized disordered electron liquid.
Energy relaxation is studied in the spin-polarized disordered electron systems in the diffusive regime. We derive a quantum kinetic equation in which the kernel of the electron-electron collision integral explicitly depends on the electron magnetization. As a consequence, the inelastic scattering rate has a nonmonotonic dependence on the spin polarization of the system.

One of the central challenges in kinetic theory is the derivation of macroscopic evolution equations—describing, for example, the dynamics of an electron gas—from the underlying fundamental microscopic laws of classical or quantum mechanics. An iconic mathematical model in this research area is the Lorentz gas, which describes an ensemble of non-interacting point particles in an infinite array ...

Quantum transport in disordered systems has been studied for many years, yet many open problems remain. One focus of these investigations is the interference of inelastic electron scattering due to electron-phonon interaction and elastic electron scattering due to impurities, boundaries and defects. Electron-phonon interaction determines the electron energy loss rate and also manifests itself i...

Density functional theory is extensively employed for the calculation of atomic and molecular properties. Achieving greater chemical accuracy or computational efficiency is desirable and this has motivated attempts to construct improved kinetic-energy functionals (KEFS) but that is not our aim in this paper. Rather, we aim to obtain expressions for the exact kinetic energy and exact noninteract...
